Rosslyn
There’s something curious happening these days at the corner of Fort Myer Drive and Wilson Boulevard in the heart of Rosslyn. Looking around, the visual elements start to add up: Wilson rolls down a steep hill, through a canyon of tall buildings, bumps into a striking tear-shaped glass office building where a large TV screen flashes the news as commuters walk by. Lunchtime crowds line up for burritos, sushi and salad bowls. Cranes overhead lift and place more glass and steel. Looking north, Key Bridge arches over the Potomac, and to the east the dome of the old Newseum space hovers above the street.

Military might
Operating since 1968 in a little building on Route 1 near Quantico, the Globe and Laurel restaurant became something of an unofficial shrine to the strength of the Marine Corps and the dedication of law enforcement. Shadow boxes packed with Marine memorabilia — a canteen carried at Saipan, a Medal of Honor — lined the dark, panelled walls. Patches put up by law enforcement officers from across the country plastered the ceiling.

A modern savings plan
Little in architecture and design elicits quite as much raw emotion as modernism. You either love it or you hate it — and either way you’re passionate. Consider DC Modern, the nascent effort to identify and, in some cases, seek landmark status for the city’s midcentury modern buildings. It has both fervent followers and ardent opposition, and they’re headed for a clean-lined collision this fall.

In downtown D.C., new rooms with a view
For decades, the Woodward Building was one of downtown’s best-kept secrets. The office building’s eclectic mix of retail and office tenants happily traded Class A accouterments for cheap rent and the convenience and cachet of a first-class location at 15th and H streets NW. When the real estate boom swept downtown several years ago, D.C. developer SJG Properties put the kibosh on cut-rate deals, instead opting for a $45 million overhaul to transform the historic building into high-end luxury apartments. The building reopened this year, combining its historic touches with essential luxury features for the 21st century: concierge services, state-of-the-art exercise and meeting space, as well as a penthouse party room and observation deck. Residents can even order room service from the nearby Sofitel Lafayette Square hotel across the street.
